latest first- Conviction overturned for Portlaoise stabbing and aggravated burglary Assault causing serious harm · Co. Laois
In the early hours of 26 July 2016, a balaclava-clad man dressed in black and carrying a knife confronted Teresa Ryan and band members, including Kevin Kenny, at her home in The Hermitage, Portlaoise, Co Laois, and stabbed Kenny in the stomach, lacerating his small bowel in a potentially life-threatening injury. Ryan identified the intruder to gardaí as her former partner, Gavin Hanway, a 55-year-old man from Walkinstown, Dublin, who was 44 at the time of the offence. Hanway was convicted by a jury at Portlaoise Courthouse in 2024 of assault causing serious harm to Kenny and aggravated burglary, and sentenced to 12 years in prison. In November 2026, the Court of Appeal allowed his appeal and directed a retrial, ruling that a highly irregular procedure had allowed forensic evidence from his car to be admitted at trial.
