Seán McCarthy, a man in his 60s, had €26,400 stolen in an email fraud scam in April 2019 when the final stage payment for a holiday home in County Kerry was diverted to a bogus bank account. Jack Ward, 22, of Tipperary, and Kelvin Kleinovis, 21, of Dublin, were used as money mules, with Kleinovis receiving the full amount and transferring €9,700 to Ward and €9,600 to a third man still before the court. Both pleaded guilty to recklessly handling the proceeds of crime at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. In February 2022, Judge Melanie Greally suspended an eight-month term for Ward and Judge Pauline Codd suspended a two-year term for Kleinovis. The bank recovered €16,580, leaving the victim out of pocket by €9,820.
