On 1 November 2018, a 19-year-old man suffered a broken jaw after Keith McInerney, aged 21, of Kileely Court, Limerick city, struck him with a right-hand punch outside a takeaway on Ellen Street, Limerick city. McInerney had accused the victim of giving cheek to his uncle at Thomond Student Village the previous night, and the incident was described as a case of mistaken identity. McInerney pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. In April 2023, Judge O'Donnell imposed a two-year prison sentence suspended in full, with a bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two years.
