On 13 January 2023, a 23-year-old Croatian woman was struck on the head and had her ear pods knocked off during an attempted robbery on McSwiney Street, Dundalk, after a man followed her from the Rampart Road area. Keith Hughes, of Cox's Demesne, Dundalk, was charged with attempted robbery and assault causing harm, and was refused bail at Dundalk District Court in January 2023 before being remanded in custody. He was sentenced at Dundalk Circuit Court in May 2024 to four years for attempted robbery, with the final 18 months suspended and the assault charge taken into consideration. He must be supervised by the Probation Service for 18 months after release and engage with his medical regime.

Keith Hughes, a 30-year-old man from Oakland Park, Dundalk, was sentenced at Dundalk district court in February 2022 for breaking a window at McGuinness Wines and causing criminal damage to a panel of glass on 16 July 2021. He was also charged with having a knife in his possession on Jocelyn Street, Dundalk, on the same date. The court heard he had 65 previous convictions and admitted gaining access to the premises in search of money. Judge Eirinn McKiernan imposed a six-month sentence suspended on an 18-month good behaviour bond, with the defence citing his troubled past, addiction, and mental health issues.
