Stephen Butler, a 23-year-old man, killed his father John Butler, a 48-year-old man, during a fistfight on the doorstep of their shared home in Portlaw, Co Waterford, in the early hours of 11 January 2020 after the pair had been drinking at the Clodagh Bar. Butler was initially charged with assault causing harm, later upgraded to murder, and pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court. After an eight-day trial in October 2021, the jury returned a majority verdict finding him not guilty of murder and guilty of manslaughter. He was sentenced to four years' imprisonment on 17 January 2022.
