Sanjeev Chada, a 52-year-old non-Irish man, strangled his sons Eoghan, 10, and Ruairi, 5, in an isolated lane near Ballintubber, County Mayo, on 29 July 2013, after taking them from their home in County Carlow under the pretext of bowling. He placed their bodies in the boot of his car and deliberately crashed into a wall. He was arrested after a failed suicide attempt, pleaded guilty in 2014, and was sentenced to two concurrent life terms. He has now applied for parole after serving 12 years, with no decision yet made.

In July 2013, Sanjeev Chada strangled his sons Eoghan, 10, and Ruairí, 5, in an isolated lane in Ballintubber, County Mayo, after staying the night in the car, then placed their bodies in the boot before deliberately crashing into a wall approximately 10 hours later. He had embezzled €56,000 from a local community group ten days earlier and had written an email to himself expressing his desire to kill his wife and children at least a year and a half before. Chada pled guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014. In 2026, he applied for parole, and his ex-wife Kathleen Chada appeared before the parole board saying her greatest fear is that he will kill her if released.
