latest first- Woman jailed for theft from dead cousin's credit union in Cork Theft · Co. Cork
On 22 December 2022, 61-year-old woman Sheila Aherne entered Synergy credit union in Fermoy, Co Cork, wearing a scarf and a Covid-style mask, and withdrew close to €22,000 from the credit union account of her recently deceased 77-year-old cousin, Kathleen Cahill. She closed the account, clearing it of over €21,900, and attempted to lodge the cheque in her own bank account before returning to the credit union to have a cheque written in her own name. She was arrested after her behaviour at her own bank raised suspicion and charged with theft, deception and money laundering. She entered a guilty plea on all charges and was sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court by Judge John Martin to 18 months in prison, with the last nine months suspended.
