  Karina Kelly, a 60-year-old woman of Clontarf Road, Clontarf, Dublin, was charged over overclaiming €43,000 of child benefit between February 2002 and January 2018. In 2002 she claimed to have given birth to twins while visiting family in the United States, and a 2018 review was triggered when one of her children applied for a PPS number. Kelly was arrested and interviewed three times, and she repaid the full amount in March 2025. On 5 June 2026 she pleaded guilty to sample counts of theft, use of a false instrument and forgery at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and received a three-year sentence, suspended for four years on strict conditions.

She repaid the money in full in March 2025, pleaded guilty to sample counts of theft, use of a false instrument and forgery, and on 1 June 2026 was given a three-year sentence suspended for four years on strict conditions.
