On 7 February 2022, Kamil Szymczak, a 35-year-old Polish man from Chapel Hill, Fermoy, Co Cork, grabbed a schoolgirl by her underwear while she was on her lunch break with two friends. A local youth witnessed the incident and confronted the two men. Szymczak was arrested the following day and made admissions to gardaí. He pleaded guilty at Fermoy District Court in May 2022 and was sentenced to six months and four days in prison, three months and four days of which had already been served, with the remaining three months to run consecutively to a 15-month assault sentence.

A 16-year-old girl was approached by two men while walking alone near Fermoy town centre at 1.20pm on Monday 7 February 2022, and one of them sexually assaulted her; two teenagers who heard her screaming intervened, one sustaining a head injury requiring stitches. Kamil Szymczak, a 34-year-old Polish man living in Fermoy, was arrested that evening and charged with sexual assault of a female under Section 2 of the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act 1990. He appeared at Mallow District Court on 9 February, where Judge Alec Gabbett denied bail citing the seriousness of the offence and the juvenile victim. Szymczak was remanded in custody to appear by video-link on 15 February 2022.
