Sean Monaghan, 79, pleaded guilty to eight counts of indecent assault of his sister Julie Fogarty, 74, involving inappropriate touching and penetration with a bicycle pump in rural Galway between 1962 and 1963. The victim made a formal complaint to gardaí in 2014 and gave a statement in 2024, after which Monaghan was arrested and made admissions following an initial claim of blackmail. Justice Kerida Naidoo sentenced Monaghan at the Central Criminal Court to a global term of three years, noting that the maximum penalty available under the law at the time was insufficient.
