Jude McGovern, an 88-year-old man and former New York City police officer, had a decommissioned Smith and Wesson revolver seized from his home in Swanlinbar, Co Cavan, on 9 April 2022 when up to 10 armed officers carried out a search under a warrant signed on 7 April. The firearm, purchased in Lower Manhattan in 1968 and decommissioned in New Jersey before McGovern returned to Ireland in 1996, was identified by a Garda from a Facebook photo after four and a half years. The revolver was sent to the ballistics unit for analysis. McGovern, who never declared the firearm on his arrival in Ireland, has threatened to sue the Garda over the raid.
