latest first- Stardust inquest jury returns unlawful killing verdicts in Dublin Unlawful killings (1981 fire) · Co. Dublin
A fire at the Stardust nightclub in Artane, north Dublin, killed 48 young people in the early hours of 14 February 1981. A year-long inquest at the Dublin District Coroner's Court concluded in April 2024 with the jury returning unanimous verdicts of unlawful killing for all 48 deaths. Witnesses told the inquest that exit doors were chained and locked that night, while former manager Eamon Butterly said in a television clip that every door was open. Gardaí are to assess the coroner's report before deciding whether to open a criminal investigation, and no new criminal inquiry was under way following the verdicts.
