Jamie O'Connor, 45, a man from Ennis, was sentenced to seven months' imprisonment at Ennis Circuit Court on 23 October 2025 for the alleged assault causing harm of Joseph Mangan, 80, a retired district court judge. O'Connor allegedly punched Mangan once on the left cheek outside the Gourmet Store on Barrack Court, Ennis, at 2.25pm on 14 June 2025, after telling him 'you put me in jail for nothing.' Mangan was treated at the local injuries unit in Ennis for possible concussion and dizziness. O'Connor was arrested, charged with assault causing harm under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and further charged with stealing three cans of beer; bail was refused on 18 June and he was remanded in custody until the DPP directed the case to the Circuit Court in August. Judge Francis Comerford imposed the seven-month term, counting time in custody from 15 June to 1 September 2025.
