latest first- Man sentenced to 11 years for Naas baseball bat manslaughter Manslaughter · Co. Kildare
On 16 May 2014, Zoltan Almasi, a 49-year-old Serbian man, struck 20-year-old Joseph Dunne on the back of the head with a baseball bat at Harbour View, Naas, Co Kildare, after believing someone had banged on his van. Dunne, a student from Athy, died from the severe traumatic head injury. Almasi was convicted of murder at his first trial in 2016 and sentenced to life, but the Supreme Court quashed the conviction on a provocation appeal. His second and third murder trials both ended in hung juries, and the DPP accepted a plea of manslaughter after the third trial concluded in July 2021. On 8 September 2021, Mr Justice Michael White sentenced Almasi to 11 years in prison, backdated to 16 May 2014.
