On 6 March 2021, Irish man Dean McCarthy, 33, burst into the home of Irish woman Sinead Connolly, 34, at Bernard Curtis House, Bluebell, Dublin 12, and shot her with a handgun provided by Joseph Byrne, 33, leaving her paralysed below the chest while her eight-year-old daughter hid under the kitchen table. McCarthy pleaded guilty to attempted murder and firearm offences in January 2022 and was sentenced in April 2022 to 16 years in prison with the final year suspended for two years. Byrne, who provided the loaded G9A Grand Power semi-automatic handgun and helped McCarthy escape the scene, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition. On 6 October 2022, Mr Justice Paul McDermott at the Central Criminal Court sentenced Byrne to 11 years in prison with 18 months suspended, reduced from a headline of 14 years.
