More than €460,000 (about €461,275 in another account) was defrauded from the Trinity College hardship fund in a sophisticated scheme involving more than 200 transactions. Between October 2020 and February 2021, €7,100 was transferred in four transactions into the AIB and Revolut accounts of Jonathan McMahon, a 27-year-old man from Dublin 13, who was arrested by appointment. McMahon pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the proceeds of crime, and Judge Pauline Codd refused the defence's application for the Probation Act. On 9 May 2024 the judge imposed a one-year prison sentence suspended in full, with €1,500 to be handed over and €2,000 paid in compensation to the hardship fund within 12 months.
