Jonathan Flanagan, 22, an Irish man living in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, was killed when a Dublin to Belfast express train collided with him and a friend who were taking a shortcut via the railway tracks at Gormanston Train Station, Co Meath, shortly before 9.30pm on 14 September 2022. His friend, in his 30s, and the train driver were both treated for shock at the scene. Mr Flanagan was treated by emergency services at the scene but was later pronounced dead, and his body was taken to Navan mortuary for a post mortem examination. Gardaí are treating the incident as an accident, while Irish Rail and the Railway Accident Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances of the collision.
