In March 2022, a 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Laois by John Parkinson, 68, of Trumera, Mountrath, while he was operating an unlicensed taxi she had got into. Parkinson admitted the assault at Portlaoise District Court, where the case was adjourned to 23 November 2023 for a victim impact statement, which a garda then read. On 24 November 2023 he received a six-month sentence suspended for two years, a €1,000 fine, and an order to pay the victim €5,000 compensation by January 2025.
