  • High Court reserves decision on Limerick car dealership money laundering case Money laundering (proceeds of crime); VAT fraud (alleged) · Co. Limerick

The Criminal Assets Bureau alleges that Stephen Bawn Motors Ltd, trading as Bawn Motors on Old Ballysimon Road, Limerick, was used to launder money from the illegal drugs trade and was involved in VAT fraud. The business, which operated from a portacabin on a leased lot for about seven years, had 111 cars seized in March 2019, which were later auctioned for approximately €820,000. The proceedings are against the company and Mike Nash, with an address in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, who claims to own over 50 of the seized vehicles, while John O'Donoghue from Rathkeale is alleged to have been involved in running the business and is serving a prison sentence for assault. CAB commenced its investigation in 2017 and applied to the High Court under Section 3 of the 1996 Proceeds of Crime Act to deem the cars and €20,000 in a linked bank account as proceeds of crime. The three-day hearing concluded in December 2022 and Mr Justice Alexander Owens reserved his decision.
