latest first- Court of Appeal overturns wrongful conviction damages claim in Roscommon Damages claim (wrongful conviction for murder) · Co. Roscommon
Peter Pringle was convicted in 1980 of the murders of gardaí John Morley and Henry Byrne during a bank robbery in Ballaghadreen, County Roscommon, and sentenced to death in 1981, later commuted to 40 years. His convictions were quashed by the Court of Criminal Appeal in 1995 after he had served 14 years and 10 months. Pringle subsequently brought a damages claim against the State, which the High Court struck out on grounds of inordinate and inexcusable delay. In May 2022, a three-judge Court of Appeal panel overturned the High Court's decision and remitted the case for fresh consideration.
