John Merrick, a 77-year-old former Christian Brother, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to four counts of indecent assault against one sixth class pupil and three counts against that pupil's classmate. The offences were committed at a school in Dublin between September 1977 and June 1978, when both victims were pupils. One of the men reported the abuse to gardaí in 2022, and Merrick had earlier District Court convictions for similar offending around the same time, followed by convictions in 1998 and suspended sentences. On 11 June 2024 Judge Codd imposed consecutive sentences totalling 22 months, with the final 10 months suspended for 12 months on strict conditions.
