John McHugh, 68, a retired garda who served 39 years in Tralee, was convicted by a jury on March 22, 2022 at Tralee Circuit Court of two counts of sexually assaulting a grandchild and of possessing indecent images of children. The abuse occurred between August 2006 and May 2009 when the girl was aged seven to eight, and the images had been downloaded from the internet and stored on a computer at his home. He was jailed for 18 months with the final 12 suspended for the possession charge and given an additional four-year consecutive sentence for the sexual assault, on top of a 13-year term from a 2015 case involving 37 counts of rape and sexual assault of family members. He was placed on the sex offenders register for ten years and ordered to undergo specialist therapy. The Irish Times reported he cannot be named to protect his victims' identities, while Extra.ie named him as John McHugh.

In the summer and autumn of 1979, a man aged 19 to 20 repeatedly indecently assaulted and had sexual intercourse with his 15-year-old sister at the family home in the Munster area. Between August 2006 and May 2009, the man downloaded and stored sexual images of children on a computer at his home in Ard na Lí, Tralee. He was questioned by gardaí in 2012 and charged in 2020, pleading guilty to five counts of indecent assault and five counts of unlawful carnal knowledge, and was convicted by a jury on March 22, 2022, at Tralee Circuit Court of possessing the images. On May 26, 2022, retired Co Kerry garda John McHugh was sentenced to four years for the incest charges and 18 months with the final 12 months suspended for the images, and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
