Three masked men broke into the home of 73-year-old Irish farmer Tom Niland at Doonflynn, Skreen, Co Sligo, on 18 January 2022, beating him and stealing his wallet containing about €800. Niland was placed on life support and died at Sligo University Hospital on 30 September 2023, about 20 months after the attack. John Irving, 31, Francis Harman, 58, and John Clarke, 37, were initially charged with causing serious harm, upgraded to murder when Niland died, then reduced to manslaughter; Harman and Clarke pleaded guilty in July 2025, and Irving changed his not-guilty plea to guilty on the fifth day of his trial. On 16 October 2025, Mr Justice Paul McDermott at the Central Criminal Court sentenced Irving to 16 years and Harman and Clarke to 15 years each, with the final year of each sentence suspended, for a combined 43 years.
