  • Gardaí renew appeal in Clare murder of Emer O'Loughlin Murder · Co. Clare

Emer O'Loughlin, a 23-year-old art student, was found dead in a fire-destroyed mobile home at Ballybornagh, Tubber, Co Clare on 8 April 2005. John 'Fozzie' Griffin, a 57-year-old man and the last person to see her alive, owned the mobile home and disappeared from Inis Mór in April 2005 after a psychiatric hospital stay, with his clothes found on a cliff in what gardaí believe was a staged suicide. In 2010, forensic tests on her exhumed remains indicated a violent death, upgrading the investigation to murder, and an inquest jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing in November 2025. Gardaí renewed their appeal for information on the 21st anniversary in April 2026, believing Griffin is still alive and may be hiding under an alias.

  • Unlawful killing verdict in 2005 Galway murder case Murder · Co. Galway

Emer O'Loughlin, aged 23, was found dead in a burnt-out caravan at a park on the Galway-Clare border on 8 April 2005, and her death was treated as suspicious from the outset. A post-exhumation examination in 2010 revealed she had died of severe head and back injuries before the fire. John Griffin, a man from Mervue, Galway, who owned the caravan, disappeared after the fire and is believed to have faked his death and fled the country; he is wanted by Gardaí and Interpol. On 5 November 2025, an inquest jury at Kilrush courthouse returned a verdict of unlawful killing, and the family said they are delighted and want Griffin brought before a court.
