John Furey, a 34-year-old from Ballinamore, Cloghan, was charged with drink-driving, dangerous driving, failing to produce insurance and driving without insurance after his BMW 520 crashed into an oncoming Mercedes at Cappry, Ballybofey on 16 January 2022. The male driver of the Mercedes suffered a fractured ankle and foot, while his wife in the front seat had two legs broken and a broken wrist; children in the back seat were uninjured. Furey failed a roadside breath test and a blood test showed 109mg of alcohol per 100ml, more than double the legal limit of 50mg/100ml. He appeared at Letterkenny District Court on 3 December 2022, where the case was adjourned to 2 February 2023 for sentencing.
