John Earls, a 58-year-old Irish man and former Irish soldier, was arrested on 26 April 2021 after gardaí intercepted him at a car park in Corbally, Limerick, in a car carrying over a kilo of cannabis. Following an intelligence-led operation by the Limerick Garda Divisional Drugs Unit, gardaí also found over €118,000 of cannabis and more than €166,000 of cocaine in a flat at Henry Street, Limerick City, which Earls allegedly used as a drugs storehouse. Earls pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to three counts of possession of drugs worth €323,663.05 for sale or supply, with the plea date not given in the sources. On 10 December 2024 he was sentenced to six years in prison, reduced from a 10-year headline sentence for his early guilty plea, age and medical history.
