On 3 October 2020 gardaí searched the home of John Dowling, 24, of Castle View, Newcastle West, and he was later charged with possessing cocaine worth €280 (3.9 grammes) for sale or supply and cannabis worth €50. The case was heard at Newcastle West District Court, where Judge Carol Anne Coolican noted a probation report described as favourable and a history of drug use from age 12. On 3 March 2023 the court reported that Dowling had been fined €500 for possession of drugs for sale or supply and €200 for possession of cannabis.
