John Curtin, a 59-year-old man from Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on 4 November 2024 to 20 years for the rape and sexual assault of eight boys. A jury convicted him in May 2024 of 78 counts, including oral rape, anal rape and sexual assault, committed between 1995 and 2007 at his homes and in other rural areas. The boys, who were about 11 when first lured with cigarettes, reported the abuse to gardaí in 2000 but the case did not progress until the trial. Curtin, who has no previous convictions, continues to deny the charges. The judge set a headline sentence of 20 years with the final year suspended for one year, subject to conditions including probation supervision and no contact with children.
