On 4 March 2022, John Paul Carey, a 35-year-old man, is alleged to have forced his way into a house on Connolly Road, Ballyphehane, Cork, and thrown caustic soda at three brothers, Francis Costello, John Costello and Roy Costello. Francis Costello, 40, suffered the most serious injuries, losing his left eye, while his brothers sustained chemical burns to their eyes and arms. Carey was arrested shortly after midnight on 5 March 2022 and charged with assault causing serious harm. He appeared at Cork District Court on 6 March 2022, was granted bail, later pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, and was sentenced on 20 November 2023 to ten years' imprisonment with the final six months suspended.
