  John Burke, a 70-year-old man from Cullohill, Co Laois, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after his car was stopped at Levalley, Rathdowney, on 29 August 2023. A breath test at the garda station gave a reading of 49mgs per 100mls of breath. At Portlaoise District Court, the judge rejected a defence argument that his detention was unlawfully prolonged, and Burke was fined €2,500 and disqualified from driving for two years, with six months to pay and recognisance fixed in case of appeal, as reported on 8 April 2024. Guilt was not admitted in the case.

  Garda Patrick Curran, 35, is charged with assault causing harm to Garda John Burke at the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, in the early hours of 25 March 2022, the night before the Royal visit to Cashel. Burke claims Curran punched him in the head and face, and that he felt a thumb in his eye and a knee in his back. The case was heard before Judge Elizabeth McGrath at Thurles District Court, with the first hearing in November 2023 and a second hearing in March 2024. Curran denied any knowledge of the incident, saying he was in bed for the night. The case was adjourned to 20 December.
