On 3 December 2020 at 11.35pm, two males were fighting in the middle of the street outside the courthouse on Main Street, Portlaoise. Joe Nevin, 27, a man of Portlaoise, was charged with intoxication and using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. At Portlaoise District Court, Judge Catherine Staines noted it was his sixth public order conviction and that he clearly had a problem with alcohol. Defence counsel said Nevin was taking medication at the time and had been provoked. He was sentenced to three months suspended for one year.
