Joe Dunne, an 82-year-old former priest from Ballycrystal, Co Offaly, befriended a young woman in hospital while she was highly vulnerable after previous abuse and indecently assaulted her on a number of occasions between January and December 1989 during trips to the Rape Crisis Centre. The case came to light in 2019 when gardaí found letters the woman had written to her bishop, and Dunne was arrested and interviewed. He pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault at the Central Criminal Court. In March 2023, Mr Justice Paul McDermott sentenced him to four years' imprisonment, wholly suspended, but in December 2023 the Court of Appeal overturned the fully suspended sentence and imposed a two-year jail term.
