  James Murphy, 62, a full-time carer for his fiancée, was arrested after telling Sgt JJ Kirby to 'f**k off' while heavily intoxicated at Lyster Square, Portlaoise, on 12 June 2021. He was charged with intoxication and using threatening, abusive, insulting words in a public place. At his first court appearance in October 2021, the case was adjourned to 25 November. He was given time to bring a €200 contribution to the Garda Benevolent Fund.

James Greene, 41, of Portlaoise, was charged with having an uncontrolled dog, though he was not the owner of the second dog involved. At Portlaoise District Court in September 2021, the court was told the dog had been rehomed with a responsible dog trainer. Judge Staines directed €400 in compensation to JJ Kirby and applied the Probation Act.
