Richard McLaughlin, 35, fatally injured Jimmy Loughlin, 20, with a crowbar in Loughlin's rented home at Connolly Street, Sligo, on 24 February 2018. McLaughlin had a history of mental health issues, including a 2012 incident in which he tied up his mother and threatened her with a machete, and a garda wrote to superiors in April 2015 saying he was a danger to others. In July 2019, McLaughlin was found not guilty by reason of insanity of the murder at the Central Criminal Court. An inquest into Loughlin's death is now being heard at Sligo Coroner's Court.
