• Limerick man remanded on human trafficking charge over 66 people transported from Greece Human trafficking · Co. Limerick

  Jeremiah O'Brien, a 55-year-old man from Rathkeale, Co Limerick, is alleged to have facilitated the transportation of 66 people without life jackets from near Nafplio, Greece, towards Italy, and the boat was later found stranded on a rocky shore near Gyalia beach close to Gerolimenas. The case is dated 11 November 2017. O'Brien was charged with human trafficking, and at a High Court bail hearing reported on 11 December 2025 the State contested his bail application, with the court remanding him in custody with consent to bail. The latest development is that a hearing date has been fixed for January 14th.

  Jeremiah O'Brien of Deel Court, Rathkeale, was driving a white Ford Transit van on the wrong side of the road in Rathkeale at about 5.25pm on 19 April 2020 when a garda stopped the vehicle. The garda detected a strong smell of cannabis and found a Ziplock bag of cannabis valued at €1,082, and O'Brien tested positive for cocaine. He was charged with drug driving, careless driving, and possession of cannabis. At Newcastle West court, the cannabis charge was taken into consideration, and O'Brien was fined €400 for careless driving and €500 with a 12-month disqualification for drug driving.
