  • Waterways Ireland and employee sent for trial over Dublin workplace safety charges Health and safety offence (workplace safety failures causing personal injury) · Co. Dublin

On 14 January 2020, a homeless Eritrean man in his 30s, Elias Adane, was paralysed when a mechanical digger cleared his tent from the Grand Canal bank at Leeson Street Bridge, Dublin 2. A Health and Safety Authority investigation led the DPP to authorise charges against Waterways Ireland and its employee Jennifer Blackford under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, including failing to check whether the tent was occupied before removal. At a first listing before Judge Anthony Halpin at Dublin District Court in July 2024, the DPP consented to both defendants being sent forward for trial on indictment. A return-for-trial order sent Waterways Ireland and Ms Blackford, who is on bail, to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with a mention scheduled for 11 October.
