Jason Smith, a 22-year-old homeless man, spat on a female security guard in a Tesco store on West Street, Drogheda, on 23 July 2022, before following a male customer who had commented, hitting him several times and stealing his satchel. He was also charged with assault arising from the store incident and with arson from wheelie bin fires in Dundalk on 25 May 2021. At Dundalk District Court on 29 September 2022, Judge Eirinn McKiernan sentenced him to six months for the robbery, with the assault and arson charges taken into consideration. The judge noted he was on a suspended sentence when several offences were committed, and the defence cited mental health difficulties.
