On 24 September 2020, Jason Killeen, 19, died when the car he was a front seat passenger in struck a tree at Coolnafarna, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. The driver, Martin Ditchburn, 23, had been en route late at night to Castlerea to help a friend with jump leads. Ditchburn pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death. In October 2022, Judge Eoin Garavan at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to a suspended three-year prison term, reduced from five years, and a six-year driving ban suspended for three years.
