On 12 July 2023 at about 2.30am, Jason Kelly (53) and an unnamed accomplice smashed the front door of a Ray-Ban store on Grafton Street in Dublin city centre with a steel stanchion and stole 170 pairs of sunglasses and eyeglasses, valued at about €27,000. CCTV captured the incident and Kelly was arrested, with no evidential value in his interview. Kelly later pleaded guilty to robbing the opticians on 12 July 2023. On 11 July 2024 he was sentenced to three years in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which is the latest development.

Four teenagers attacked and kicked Jason Kelly in Croom Town Park, Limerick, on 30 May 2020 after he refused to buy alcohol for them at a local supermarket. The four, all under 18 at the time, were charged with violent disorder and pleaded guilty. At a first hearing in September 2021 the matter was adjourned to November for sentencing. In November 2021, one of the four, now 18, was sentenced to three months detention, deemed served as he had been in detention at Oberstown since summer 2020, while the others received a final chance or adjournments.
