Jason Doyle, 28, repeatedly punched and kicked his pregnant partner Karen Maguire at their home in Sligo on 10 January 2021 while intoxicated. He was charged with four counts of assault causing harm and pleaded guilty to one count on a full-facts basis at Sligo Circuit Criminal Court, receiving a two-year sentence with 15 months suspended. The State successfully appealed the sentence as unduly lenient. The Court of Appeal substituted a three-year headline sentence with nine months discounted for the guilty plea and nine months suspended, leaving 18 months to serve.
