  • Man sentenced for money laundering in Dublin smishing scam Money laundering · Co. Dublin

In November 2021, two victims were targeted in a smishing scam in which they received text messages purporting to be from Bank of Ireland saying their accounts were frozen, and money was transferred to the account of Jamie Wright, a 25-year-old man. A laptop, two iPhones, and gift cards were purchased using the funds. Wright presented himself at Finglas garda station in March 2025 and pleaded guilty to two counts of money laundering. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Cephas Power suspended a two-year prison term for three years, noting Wright was used as a money mule and had no prior convictions.
