On the night of 15 May 2024, Jamie Moonen, 30, went to the offices of Independent Dublin city councillor Malachy Steenson, 62, in North Strand, Dublin, and made threats to kill him. Moonen had earlier told a garda on the North Circular Road that he was going to kill Steenson because he was a racist and fascist. He was arrested and charged with public order offences, and later pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to making a threat to a garda to kill or cause serious harm to another person. In November 2025, the judge set a headline sentence of three years but reduced it to 13 months, taking mitigating factors into account.
