• Man sentenced to nine years for Shannon nightclub manslaughter Manslaughter; assault causing serious harm · Co. Clare

In the early hours of 18 March 2018, Nathan O'Neill, 24, from Dooradoyle in Limerick, stabbed Jamie Higgins, 23, five times and Michael Shannon three times at the Shannon Knights nightclub in Shannon, Co Clare, after an altercation. O'Neill was found by gardaí crouched in undergrowth near the club and was charged with murder and causing serious harm. He pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter, and guilty to causing serious harm to Shannon. After a first trial in early 2022 ended in a hung jury, a second jury in December 2022 acquitted him of murder and found him guilty of manslaughter. On 24 April 2023, Mr Justice Paul Burns at the Central Criminal Court sentenced O'Neill to ten years for manslaughter with the final 12 months suspended, and seven years concurrent for causing serious harm, backdated to 1 April 2022.
