latest first- Supreme Court dismisses Regency Hotel murder facilitation appeal in Dublin Facilitating a criminal organisation · Co. Dublin
David Byrne, a 33-year-old Irish man from Crumlin, was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in Whitehall, Dublin 9, on 5 February 2016 when five men, three disguised as armed gardaí carrying AK-47 assault rifles, stormed the building during a boxing weigh-in in an attack intended to kill Daniel Kinahan. Gerard Hutch, 59, of Clontarf, Dublin, was extradited from Spain in September 2021 and charged with murder, while Jonathan Dowdall, 44, a former Sinn Féin councillor, and his father Patrick Dowdall, 65, pleaded guilty to facilitating the murder by booking a hotel room the night before. The Special Criminal Court acquitted Hutch of murder in April 2023, finding the key prosecution witness Dowdall unreliable, while convicting Paul Murphy, 61, and Jason Bonney, 50, of facilitating the attack by providing getaway vehicles. Murphy was sentenced to nine years and Bonney to eight-and-a-half years in May 2023, and the Court of Appeal rejected their conviction appeals in November 2025. The Supreme Court dismissed Bonney's further appeal on 21 July 2026, leaving the convictions and sentences intact.
Sentenced, 17 Oct 2022Convicted · 1 report - High Court orders sale of Saggart house seized as drug-trafficking proceeds Proceeds of crime (drug trafficking) · Co. Dublin
The Criminal Assets Bureau alleged that Daniel Kinahan, a man aged 44, and Thomas Kavanagh, a man aged 53, gave Jim Mansfield Jnr, a man aged 54, two suitcases containing €4.5 million in cash on Good Friday 2009 to be invested in property for the Kinahan group. When the Mansfield business entered receivership during the financial crash, the deal collapsed and the five-bedroom house at 10 Coldwater Lakes, Saggart, south Dublin, was handed over to the Kinahan gang around 2014. The Mansfield brothers consented to waiving their claims, Kavanagh was served at Belmarsh Prison in England, and Kinahan was served at two addresses in Dubai. On 13 October 2022, the High Court ruled the property was proceeds of drug-trafficking crime, and on 15 November 2022, Mr Justice MacGrath appointed Kevin McMeel as receiver to sell the house on the open market.
