Between April and November 2019, James Meagher, a 39-year-old man from Graigueswood, Freshford, Co Kilkenny and a hurling coach who had coached the Kilkenny minor team, took money from a man he knew from childhood, who believed he was investing in a sliotar business that did not exist. Meagher pleaded guilty to, and was convicted of, fraudulently taking €42,000 (one report gives €41,000), with seven other offences taken into consideration under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001. On March 22, 2023, Judge Elva Duffy at Kilkenny Circuit Court imposed a two-year sentence with the final 18 months suspended, reported as a six-month jail term, and postponed activation until June 1 because of Meagher's college commitments. Meagher lodged an appeal against severity on April 18, 2023, and on June 7, 2023 his counsel told the Court of Appeal that he had instructed that the appeal be withdrawn.
