James Hiney, 67, was found guilty by a jury at Tullamore Circuit Court of eight charges of indecent assault of Tara Kelly, who was eight at the time. The offences took place at Hiney's residence in Clara, Offaly, between October 1987 and May 1988. A complaint was made to gardaí at the time but nothing came of it, and the victim made a further statement to gardaí in January 2020. Judge Keenan Johnson sentenced Hiney to three and a half years, suspending the last two years and three months, with the sentence backdated to his custody on May 10. The conviction means Hiney will be placed on the register of sex offenders.
