On 8 February 2024, Louis Herdman, a 22-year-old man, punched James Dunford, a 21-year-old man, three times at the Grand Parade in Cork City, with the third punch knocking Dunford backwards and causing him to hit his head on the floor. Dunford spent 15 days in hospital, some in an induced coma, and suffered a brain injury and serious skull fractures. Herdman pleaded guilty to intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm. On 24 November 2025, Judge Dermot Sheehan at Cork Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Herdman to a four-year suspended sentence, citing no previous convictions, the guilty plea, €20,000 in compensation, and a low re-offending risk.
