James Donoghue, 70, a man of Portlaoise, was arrested for criminal damage and being drunk and abusive after a row developed on Patrick Street in Mountmellick at 12.10am on 21 January 2023. He had been attending a family function and came out to broker peace when a group of males were acting aggressively, and he caused €50 damage to a garda's radio during his arrest. At Portlaoise District Court on 10 March 2023, Judge Andrew Cody said the charges would be struck out if Donoghue paid €250 to the Garda Benevolent Fund by 13 April.
