James Carroll, 47, of 92 Cherrygrove, Portlaoise, was accused of possessing drugs for sale or supply at his address on 10 April 2025, with the drugs valued at an estimated €3,500. He was on bail at the time for a separate drug offence for which he had been sentenced to eight years in prison in March 2025. He pleaded guilty at Portlaoise District Court, appearing via video link. Judge Gubbins imposed a six-month prison sentence, consecutive to the existing sentence.

On 16 June 2024, Gardaí from the Laois Drugs Unit searched a property in Portlaoise, Co. Laois as part of Operation Tara and found a locked shed containing drugs worth €285,000 and a sawn-off shotgun with ammunition. James Carroll, a man aged 45, was arrested at the scene and charged with drug and firearms offences. He appeared before Portlaoise District Court on 18 June 2024, was remanded in custody, and the case was adjourned for DPP directions. In May 2025, a book of evidence containing 18 charges was served and the DPP consented to the case being sent forward for trial. Carroll was remanded on bail to appear before Portlaoise Circuit Court on 18 June 2025.
