  • Man jailed for firework endangerment and assault on gardaí in Dublin Endangerment; assault on gardaí · Co. Dublin

Jake Merriman, a 31-year-old man from Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, was sentenced in October 2022 to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty to endangerment of life and assault on gardaí during an anti-lockdown protest on Grafton Street on 27 February 2021. A juvenile handed Merriman a firework, which he lit and threw into the crowd, where it landed close to Garda Mark Walsh and perforated his right eardrum. Merriman was also charged with violent disorder, possession of glass bottles, and minor assaults on two other gardaí, and was sent forward for trial at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in November 2021. Judge Martin Nolan sentenced him to three years with the final 16 months suspended, with a condition that he pay €5,000 to Garda Walsh.
